Innovation in Drug Development – Member meeting June 20th, 2019
Great turnout today for three presentations and Q&A on the state of innovation in drug development!
Moderated by Jim Braun, VP Innovation, Georgia-Pacific Point A Center for Supply Innovation the panel covered a range of subjects in just 30 minutes.
Dr. Dennis Liotta, Executive Director, The Emory Institute for Drug Development presented on FRESH, a Machine Learning Algorithm used for creating Novel c-Abl Inhibitors for treating Parkinson’s Disease. His presentation made clear the potential of using AI for drug research while at the same time pointing out limitations: the new inhibitors the algorithm finds might still be hard to produce or absorb by the body.
These challenges were a perfect transition to the next presentation by Dr. Neha Shah Scientist-III (Product Development), at Recro Gainsville. In her presentation she took the audience through strategies to overcome drug development challenges. She reviewed techniques for enhancing solubility and multiparticulate drug delivery systems as possible solutions.
The final presentation by Dr. Alan Smith, Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer, 4P Therapeutics covered yet another promising field in drug development – transdermal patches.
