The Impact of Health Care Reform Legislation

Representatives of five top law firms participated in a panel session to translate the landmark federal health care reform legislation for Georgia Bio members on April 29, 2010 at Georgia Tech Research Institute Conference in Atlanta, GA.

This unique event brought together experts from Alston & Bird, Arnall Golden Gregory, Kilpatrick Stockton, King & Spalding and Thompson Hine to guide Georgia’s life sciences community through major portions of nearly 2,000 pages of new health care law.

The lawyers focused on elements of the health care reform bill critical to pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies, hospitals, physicians groups, and universities. In addition to specific business-related aspects of the legislation, the discussion will involve the implications for patients and employers, in general.

Participating on the panel were Daniel J. Mohan of Kilpatrick Stockton, William Kitchens of Arnall Golden Gregory, Richard L. Shackelford of King & Spalding, Walt Linscott of Thompson Hine and Timothy Trysla of Alston & Bird.

The moderator was Melissa Bishop-Murphy, Senior Director of National Government Relations and Multicultural Affairs.  Through her work as a lobbyist, Ms Bishop-Murphy provides a voice for those persons who ordinarily would not have an audience with public officials.  Her responsibilities for Pfizer cover the Southeast region and Washington, D.C., where she advocated for health care reform.  Additionally, Ms. Bishop-Murphy builds national multicultural coalitions to advocate for greater access to healthcare and pharmaceuticals.
